Mississippi Personhood Amendment

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

I had to post this awesome analysis on the way women are treated in media both as fictional characters and actual people by leupagus

What’s your favorite Tom Hanks movie or character, and why?

I really loved him in the Green Mile, the whole movie was amazing, but I have a soft spot for Big.

Who was your favorite childhood superhero, and why?

Batman, I know, I know, he's extremely popular now because of the movies. However, I remember growing up watching the Batman the Animated Series cartoons that actually required kids to think just a little bit.  It certainly helped that Dad had already introduced me to Batman via the recordings of the Live Action TV Show and its movie when he was younger. I liked that not everything was solved with powers. I liked Superman and Spiderman but not like I love Batman.

For the record I'm so happy that Supernatural won the viewers choice of cover for TV guide.

Perfect ending to the day.

Well school has started and its a lot busier than I was expecting. I didn't expect it to be easy but for my last year I hoping there wouldn't be extremely hard classes. I was sorely mistaken.

When I go home I have to really start cleaning out my mother's things. I'm going to start with the clothes because that will be easiest for a weekend trip.

In the meantime I've been consumed by Inception, it's such a fun movie to watch and each time I go it feels like a 12 sided die; there's always something new to watch and I enjoy discussing all the different theories with my friends.

Still house-sitting and I had a slightly awkward conversation with my Uncle who's still in town.  It wasn't the subject matter, just the fact that he came over.  I know it sounds bad but he and I don't talk on a regular basis, he's notoriously quiet, and I felt bad that he would drive 30 min. to visit and leave a little less than an hour later.  We talked about the weather, of all things, and vacation spots, which wasn't so bad.

My Aunt and Uncle are coming back from Alaska in a couple of days and I'm pretty sure that they're the ones who suggested the unexpected family visit. I know they worry but I'm very much used to being left to my own devices.

Some paperwork is still ongoing...*sighs*

Summer's been slow - my internship application wasn't accepted but I've been volunteering around town for another organization.

Got some work done on the house and is in between house sitting for some family.

On another note:

Why to significantly older men feel the need to tell me that their first girlfriend was a redhead? I know it's meant to be flattering but it's still a little weird.
